The Yearbook of Farm Statistics 2011 has been published

The Yearbook of Farm Statistics, published by Tike, is a 269-page compilation that comprehensively summarises statistics closely related to agriculture and the agricultural sector in Finland. The data in the new publication is mainly from 2010, but it also contains time series that cover periods of up to 40 years. Important international agricultural statistics have been included in the latter half of the book.
Excerpts from the new yearbook:
• There were 62,767 farms in Finland in 2010. This is 30 per cent less than in 1995, the year Finland joined the EU, when there were 99,964 farms.
• The average arable area of farms has increased by 15 hectares since 1995. In 2010 it was 36.7 hectares. 57 per cent of the total arable area was underdrained.
• There were 289,300 dairy cows in 2010 compared to 720,000 in 1980.
• Milk production in 2010 was 2.7 million litres. In 1980 the figure was 0.9 billion litres. However, the average milk production per cow has increased to 7,896 litres from 4,478 litres in 1980.
• In 2010, beef production was 83 million kilograms; pork production was about 203 million kilograms, and poultry production 96.3 million kilograms. In 1980, beef production was 113.7 million kilograms, pork production was about 168.9 million kilograms, and poultry production only 15.2 million kilograms.
• Butter consumption was 16.6 million kilograms and cheese consumption 114.8 million kilograms in 2010. In 1980, butter consumption was 54 million kilograms and cheese consumption only 38 million kilograms.
• In 2010, there were 1,062 fur farms in Finland, compared to 6,000 in the early 1980s. In 2010, there were approximately 4,600 reindeer owners compared to 7,100 in the early 1980s.
