Yearbook of Farm Statistics 2010 out now

Tike Yearbook of Farm Statistics is a compilation of statistical information related to the agricultural sector. The data in the newly published edition is primarily from 2009. The book also covers long term trends going back as far as 1970 and includes key figures on international farm statistics.
Selected examples of data in the latest yearbook:
• In 2009, there were a total of 64,175 farms in Finland, with an average area of arable land of 35.9 hectares. Farm sizes were the largest in Uusimaa at 45.2 hectares of arable land and smallest in Southern Savonia with an average of 24.6 hectares.
• The average age of farmers in 2009 ranged from 49.1 years in Northern Ostrobothnia to 52.2 years in Åland.
• The year 2009 saw a record crop of wheat at 887 million kilograms, but only one third of the crop met the quality standards for bread wheat. The rye crop, on the other hand, was a third lower than the previous year at 42 million kilograms, half of which met the general quality standards for rye. Of the wheat crop, 1.3% was organically grown, compared to 14.1% for rye.
• There were a total of approximately 290,000 milking cows in Finland in 2009, producing a total of 2,264 million litres of milk. Of this amount, 29 million litres was organically produced milk.
• The total production of eggs in Finland in 2009 was 54 million kilograms. This is the lowest total output since the mid-1960s. Of this amount, 1.3 million kilogrammes were organically produced eggs. Finland’s self sufficiency ratio in eggs was 106% and average per capita egg consumption was 9.5 kilograms.
• In 2009, Finland was the second largest producer of oat in the EU and the seventh largest producer of barley. Finland was also the ninth largest producer of butter in the EU.
