Horticultural Statistics 2011 (final statistics) and Energy Consumption in Greenhouse Enterprises

Headlines
  • The total energy consumption of greenhouse companies was 1 700 GWh.
  • Total energy consumption decreased (-1.8%) but power consumption increased (+1.4%) in comparison to 2008.
  • Power was consumed the most, 481 GWh. It was primarily needed for lighting greenhouses.
  • Light fuel oil was the most common heating fuel. Almost 70% of the responding companies used it.
  • Heavy fuel oil (277 GWh) and sod peat (228 GWh) were the most important heating fuels in terms of usage.
  • The use of heavy fuel oil and natural gas decreased the most extensively.

  • There were 4,304 horticultural enterprises in 2011.
  • Outdoor production area was 16,563 hectares and greenhouse area 411 hectares.
  • Regarding area, the most important outdoor vegetables were garden pea (2,998 hectares), carrot (1,663 hectares) and onion (1,115 hectares).
  • The total outdoor vegetable harvest was 186 million kilos, and a record-high 73 million kilos of it was carrot.
  • 16 million kilos of berries were produced in an area of 6,073 hectares.

  • 14.2 million kilos of eggs were produced during January–March, which is 12% less than during the corresponding period of 2011.
  •  Compared to corresponding period of 2011 the volume of barn eggs (+9%) and organic eggs (+52%) grew, while those from caged hens (-21%) declined.
  •  63% of eggs were produced in enriched cages, 33% in barn-type hen houses and 4% came from organic poultry farms.
