Milk production was 2,268 million liters in 2010, which was slightly more than the year before. Egg production grew to record numbers since the year 2000, to some 61 million kilos. The source for this information is Tike (The Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry).

Slight growth in milk production
In 2010, 2,268 million liters of milk was produced, which is some four million liters more than the year before. Dairies received 2,222 million liters, out of which some 30 million liters was organically produced milk. The average fat content of the dairy milk rose to 4.26 percent and the protein content to 3.48 percent. It is estimated that some 46 million liters of milk was used on the farms. Milk used on the farms was milk used in farm households and milk given to the animals.

In December there were some 10,600 milk producers, which is nearly the same as the year before. Some 650 producers or a little less than six percent gave up the production of milk in the course of the year.

There were 284,280 dairy cows in December, which is about the same number as the year before. The average production rate for the dairy cows rose a little less than one percent, to 7,900 liters per cow last year.

More eggs were produced last year than in any other year since the year 2000
Egg production rose to some 61 million kilos in 2010. The rate of production last year was the highest since the year 2000. More eggs than this were previously produced in 1998 when the production was some 64 million kilos. The production rose by 14 percent from the year before. In 2009 there was a slump in the production due to breaks in production on account of the salmonella clean-ups.

Of the eggs received by the packaging plants, 93% were in class A and 7 percent in class B. The total of 73 percent of the eggs were produced in hen houses with battery cages or enriched cages, 24 percent in barn type hen houses and 3 percent in hen houses with organic production.
