Description

The statistics contain information on the cultivation areas of Finland’s most important field crops, fallow land, and the area of arable land put to other uses.

Content

The statistics illustrate the cultivation areas for the most common field crops in Finland. The cultivation area for each crop is presented in thousands of hectares for the whole of Finland and also by Employment and Economic Development Centre. The classification of farms into regions is based on the municipality in which a farm’s administrative centre is located.

Categories

Data is available for the whole of Finland and also regionally by Employment and Economic Development Centre.

Data collection and sources

The data for the Cultivated Arable Land statistics is primarily based on the Farm Register, which is a complete enumeration. The register’s population includes all farms that engage in agricultural production and have at least one hectare of arable land. The population also includes all those farms that engage in agricultural production with less than one hectare, but whose economic size is at least one European Size Unit (ESU). Most of the data on cultivation areas in the Farm Register is obtained from the Integrated Administration and Control System (IACS), which is part of the Rural Business Register. Questionnaires are sent directly to farmers who do not apply for subsidies.

Update frequency

The statistics are updated annually.

Preparation and publication schedule

The statistics are published in December. An advance estimate for the whole of Finland is available in June, and an advance estimate by Employment and Economic Development Centre in June/July.

Time series

Data is available from the 1920s onwards.
