Description

The Farm Structure Survey contains a comparable set of statistics on the structures of farms and horticultural enterprises in all of the countries of the European Economic Area.

Content

The statistics contain data on the number of farms, production sector, forms of ownership, land use, crop cultivation, livestock production, farmers and other labour force on the farm, working hours spent on agricultural work, additional off-farm employment, secondary businesses on farms, organic production, farm machinery and equipment, manure storage, and the area of land that requires irrigation.

Data collection and sources

The majority of the data for the Farm Structure Survey is obtained from a range of registers, the most important ones being the Farm Register, the Horticultural Enterprise Register and the Bovine Register. Another major source is the questionnaire sent to about 35,000 farm and horticultural enterprises.

Update frequency

The Farm Structure Survey is conducted every 2–3 years. Approximately every ten years, the survey is carried out as a total enumeration with a questionnaire sent to all farms and horticultural enterprises.

Preparation and publication schedule

The results of the Farm Structure Survey appear in a range of publications during the following year. Compilation of the final results is completed by the end of August in the year after the survey was carried out.

Time series

Farm Structure Surveys have been conducted in Finland in 1995, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2007. The next survey is scheduled for 2010 (as part of the Agricultural Census).
